Two years ago, I tasted a persimmon. Yum. Right AFTER they went out of season (mid-October - November) I found a cookbook with persimmon pie and thought: really? that's odd. Right down my alley. Whatevs, make it the next year, right? Nope. Moved, and last year people took a slow step away from me when I adamantly asked about them, let alone waltzing into the supermarket to pluck a few from the display. But just look at them, they're gorgeous, I had to do something....
So, two years after the first bite, I found them on-line. My husband said "Um, isn't Harry & David that fancy place? You are not SERIOUSLY going to order persimmons from California and pay that much for them." Silence. Stare. Silent thoughts by me..... "Other places got bad reviews, saying the fruit arrived jumbled up and squished." Husband pointed out "But you're going to put them in a PIE anyway." Not the point.
So, this is how they looked when they arrived.
And now I finally get my moment:
Thanks to my Mom's gift of this handy dandy mini measurer, when a recipe calls for a "pinch" I can deliver exactly that. Also a "smidge" and a "dash."
Using my crust cover so it doesn't burn.
Et Voila!
Turns out, the consistency is like custard, and I DO NOT LIKE custard. Teen #1 said good but too watery. Teen #2 said "too foamy." SO, basically #Fail. But it's all about the journey. LOL.
BUT. Beware, the next fruit it takes me two years to find. Who knows what I will make out of it.

Guess I'll throw in some desserts so they come back every once in a while.
Cheers!
